Bigleaf Maple, also known as Pacific Coast Maple and Western Maple, ranges from southern California to British Columbia and is the northwest's second most abundant species of hardwood. Bigleaf Maple's rapid early growth can provide sawtimber size trees in 25 to 30 years on a good site. Dense stands produce lumber with straighter grain and fewer knots.
Sawtimber trees measure from 11" to 48" dbh which account for 73% of a total growing stock volume of over two billion cubic feet. Bigleaf Maple is pale pinkish-brown to almost white, characterized by a close, fine grain. Its uniform color lends itself to the manufacture of fine wood furniture and cabinets. It is also peeled for innerplies in softwood plywood panels, used for pallets and chipped for paper products. Bigleaf Maple falls into the medium density range; it is moderately heavy, strong and hard. It accepts all types of stains and finishes uniformly. Random length is generally limited to 10' and width to 10" in thicknesses of 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4 and 12/4. Available in S2S, and custom millwork in S4S, cut stock, turning stock and laminated stock. Graded by western hardwood rules published in NHLA grade rule book.
